How it works
Counting follows the Unicode text segmentation rules built into your browser, so it works for any language.
- Words are runs of letters or numbers. Words joined by a hyphen, slash, @ or & with no spaces count once (state-of-the-art, and/or, name@example.com). Languages written without spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, are split into words using the browser’s dictionary. Emoji and punctuation are not words.
- Characters are what you see as single characters: an accented letter, a flag or an emoji counts as one, even when it is stored as several code points. Spaces and line breaks are included; the second count leaves out all whitespace.
- Sentences end at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Abbreviations such as “Dr.” may be counted as a sentence end.
- Paragraphs are lines that contain text; blank lines are not counted. Lines include blank lines.
- Reading and speaking time are estimates based on average adult rates of 238 words per minute for silent reading and 183 for reading aloud (Brysbaert, 2019). Your own pace will differ.
Text up to 1,000,000 characters is analysed in a background thread, so typing stays responsive even for long documents. Your text is not saved: it is gone when you close or reload the page.
